Kiwis for Gold 18 Conference in Perth
By Ross Louthean

There will be presentations from New Zealand geoscientists at the Gold 18 Conference in Perth in August.

The conference, which is run by Geosymposia in conjunction with SJS Resource Management and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG), is a sequel to Gold 17 which was run in Rotorua last year.

A principal of SJS Resource Management is Julian Vearncombe who is an educator and consultant to the industry.

Two prominent speakers at the Rotorua conference were Professor Dave Craw and Dr Doug MacKenzie of the Geology Department at the University of Otago.

The preliminary programme for this year’s event includes Prof Craw as a keynote speaker. Other keynotes include Charles Butt, Quinton Hennigh, Rob Hough, Dr Neil Phillips, Franco Pirajno and Roric Smith.

Gold 18 will be held at the WACA headquarters (Western Australian Cricket Association) in Perth from August 2-3.

Areas to be covered will include technology transfer, Conglomerate-hosted gold deposits, nuggets and regolith gold. These are timely issues for Western Australia as conglomerate deposits and deposits of nugget gold have created a mini rush to the Pilbara region of Western Australia, better known for its massive iron ore deposits.

One of the companies participating in this Pilbara gold quest is De Grey Mining, which spent about two years exploring the Puhipuhi epithermal gold-silver prospect in Northland before selling to Evolution Mining which withdrew from New Zealand last year.

There are reportedly still available presentation positions for Gold 18.
