A moderate earthquake yesterday morning provided another nasty jolt for residents of Kaikoura.
The 4.7 magnitude quake hit about 5 am at a depth of 17 kilometres, 15 km north-east of Kaikoura which was devastated by a major earthquake about two years ago.
TVNZ reported that the earthquake prompted closure of State Highway One, south of the town, to allow an inspection.
Roads that were closed were from Ferniehurst to Peketa and detours were arranged through Waiau on Highway Seven.
Earlier yesterday morning residents in the lower North Island were awoken by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake, 35 km south-west of Wanganui.
GeoNet reported that this quake was felt as far away as Auckland and Wairoa.
