Moderate earthquakes on South Island

To late last night the monitoring service GeoNet had reported two “moderate” earthquakes on the north eastern side of the South Island for the weekend.

Early on Saturday evening a 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred 15 kilometres north-east of Kaikoura – the seaside centre that was devastated by a major earthquake that also saw large buildings damaged in Wellington.

This latest quake was at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Yesterday morning at 8.40 am a 4.2 magnitude earthquake had its epicentre 5 km east of Seddon at the top of the South Island, a town that has suffered building damage in past earthquakes.

The Seddon quake was at a depth of 12 km.

GeoNet is a collaboration between the Earthquake Commission and GNS Science.
